Personal summary of Five worlds of AI by Scott Aaronson and Boaz Barak.
AI-Fizzle. AI progress stops in its tracks, the same way that nuclear power turned out not to change the world.
Futurama. AI makes changes comparable to the industrial/computer revolutions, but AIs are still tools, and mostly just improve quality of life a lot.
AI-Dystopia. Same but bad because it exacerbates surveillance, capitalism and inequalities.
Singularia. AIs become agentic alien gods. Fortunately they’re benevolent, so they solve all our problems, give us inlimited abundance and perfect fulfillment.
Paperclipalypse. Same but their goals make them indifferent or hostile to humans, so we die (typically fast because we’d be a hindrance).
What regulations can help?
- AI-Fizzle: none
- AI-Dystopia -> Futurama: AI ethics, anti-trust, prevent/mitigate misuse
- Paperclipalypse -> Singularia: control/ban training runs worldwide
(Presumably, a lot of the work to move from Paperclipalypse to Singularia is technical alignment work rather than regulations.)
